Four years ago I returned to Cambridge after twenty-two years working as a photographer and English teacher in Osaka, Japan. After graduating from what is now known as Surrey Institute of Art and Design I went out to Japan to take photographs for several London photo colour libraries. Shortly after arriving I began studying the Japanese language and Japanese archery (Kyuudo). I then began to work as an assistant to a Japanese fashion photographer. From thereon I have used Japan as a base from where to visit surrounding Asian countries such as Thailand, Indonesia Malaysia and Korea to take documentary photographs.
Since arriving back here I have been producing very unusual framed panoramic pictures of Cambridge as well as calendars and postcards. My most recent venture is to produce a set of London postcards.
Probably influenced by my time in Japan, it is simplicity that I strive for most in the composition of the images that I take and an awareness of light. It may be of interest to know that this idea of simplicity extends to my having put to one side my complicated and expensive Nikon cameras and that all of the photographs of Cambridge and London were taken with a seven million pixel Sony Cyber-shot camera. Even the panoramic photographs were taken with this camera by taking a series of shots from left to right and then merging them in Photoshop.
